TENNESSEE STATE LEGISLATION
Exemption from Sales Tax on Motor Vehicles for TN National Guard members – Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 67-6-303
In 2025, EANGTN continued work on a proposal to amend the current Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 67-6-303. As the current bill reads, active-duty military and TN National Guardsmen in AGR status, may purchase one (1) motor vehicle a year and be exempt from paying sales tax on that purchase.
These bills did not make it through the Senate Finance, Ways, and Means Subcommittee in April 2025 during the 114th General Assembly.
They are being re-introduced in the 115th General Assembly (revised versions) and likely voted upon again in Spring 2026. WE NEED grass roots efforts to contact all members of both the House and Senate Committees and ask them to support these revised bills.
EANGTN has submitted a proposed amendment that would expand the scope of applicable tax exemption on the first $15,000 of the vehicle’s purchase price to TN National Guardsmen of the ranks E4 and below, every five years. The TN General Assembly will reconvene on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. The proposed bill amendment will be filed with the State of Tennessee under the same bill numbers as last year: TN Senate Bill #0294 and TN House Bill #0193. See the link below for your reference.

SUBJECT: Support TN SB0294 and TN HB0193 to Expand Exemption from Sales Tax on Motor Vehicles for Tennessee National Guard members, Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 67-6-303
I ask that you support SB0294 and HB0193 to expand exemption from sales tax on motor vehicles for Tennessee National Guard members eligibility to Tennessee National Guard members, reserve members of a uniformed service of the United States, or a Tennessee National Guard military technician of the ranks E4 and below, up to $15,000 per five years. SB0294 is sponsored by Senator Rusty Crowe of District 3. HB0193 is sponsored by Representative Renea Jones of District 4.
Current law prohibits exemption for any Tennessee National Guard member or Reserve Component service member and military technicians that are not in an “active” status. These service members serve and sacrifice for our State, just as their “active” peers, and deserve equal benefits.
Passing this important legislation would ensure that all Tennessee Guardsmen have equal access to benefits deserving of their military service. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our Armed Forces.
Sincerely,
